Mathews County is a small, relatively isolated community in Virginia located on a peninsula sandwiched between the Mobjack Bay, Chesapeake Bay and the Piankatank River. Today, Mathews has a diverse population of slightly over 9,000 people. Although the number of residents has remained stable over the decades, the profile of the citizenry has changed significantly. The main population trend is reflected in the growing number of persons over 55 years of age who reside in the county.

Mathews residents, whether lifetime or recent, have a strong sense of place. Such a sense is buoyed by the presence of a vital center. The village of Mathews is that center. It is the place where people, business and events come together to create economic energy and meet social needs.
