Enhancement Project
Mathews Main Street is a quintessential American town, defined by its mixture of buildings styles representing the development of the community from early colonial Virginia through the the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries. It is perhaps most remarkable for its authenticity and the fact that it has not been overwhelmed by modern development.
The Enhancement Plan is based on the concept design approved by the Mathews County Board of Supervisors and includes the enhancement Grant Project approved by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) in 2010. The construction plan submittal includes minor modifications to the current parking layout, grading and storm drain layout and a landscaping plan. The submittal also includes selections for lighthing fixtures and street furniture as well as options and considerations for maintenance of traffic during construction.
Economic Revitalization Study
Under the sponsorship of Mathews Main Street, the County of Mathews is performing a study of blighting conditions and potential revitalization strategies for the Mathews Court House District. The study, funded under a Business District revitalization Planning Grant is being performed in anticipation of an application submittal to the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (VDHCD) for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) that would provide funding for a variety of blight removal and redevelopment efforts, including streetscape improvements and business facade improvements.
The study involves a review of aspects of the business district, including consideration of the current economic position of the County and Business District and developing strategies to strengthen it. The strategy will identify existing market position and a vision for future development that will reposition the commercial district to capitalize on its history and assets to increase economic viability.
Main Street Drainage
The enhancement project has been expanded to include the design of drainage structures and collection systems along Main Street and a replacement to the culvert crossing Main Street south of Brick Bat Road. VDOT consultants are engaged in analyzing design improvements to the culvert crossing Main Street near the post office and out fall system adjacent to Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home where most of Main Street drains. The final design of the pipe systems will be coordinated with VDOT and their design engineers.
